Greetings, Bearers!

It’s all done!  I’ve sent in my submission for the Twist contest at Red Adept Reviews.  This piece is entitled “The Appointment,” and it’s a 5,000-ish word piece that I hope to add to a future short story collection I’m compiling.  It was a fun one to write, in part because the story is set in first person, and the narrator jumps between the past and the present, which is a neat little challenge for writing.  Jumping tenses can be tricky if you’re not careful, but upon re-reading it and making a few edits, I’m pretty confident that it came off well–at least, I hope it did. 😀  An honest writer will tell you that (s)he is never completely satisfied with a final product, but a good writer knows when to let the story stand as is and not tinker any more with it, lest it become ruined (George Lucas, anybody?).

The other fun part about this was stepping up to the challenge of a writing contest.  If you’re a writer, I encourage you to enter contests, for a couple of reasons.  First, they’re good for exposure.  Even if you don’t get any money from it or win any prizes, people get to know you.  Second, it’s a good way to make yourself a better writer.  Oftentimes you’re working to beat a due date, and at times you’ll have to step outside of your writing comfort zone, which for a writer is like exercising muscles-it hurts at first a bit, but the more you do it, the easier and better it gets.

So, between that and continuing on The Summoning of Kran, I’ve been pretty busy with writing.  I plan to set up a few more short stories in the near future, not necessarily for contests, but because some new ideas have crossed my mind (It’s amazing how stimulated the imagination is for story ideas when you spend the day around seventh and eighth grade students!) and I want to flesh them out.

Oh yeah–Christmas is coming, too. I’d like it a whole lot more without the snow thing 😦

Before I go, a word of thanks to those of you who have purchased my first two books!  I hope you’re enjoying reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them!  Feel free to drop a line to me about them! And remember that, for the rest of this month, if you buy The Summoning of Clade Josso at Smashwords, you get a coupon at the end of the novel for a free Smashwords download of The Summoning of Old Velt!  Pass the offer on to your friends, or better yet, get them for that special someone who’s expecting a new Ebook reader in their stocking (Hmmm… need to put a bug in my wife’s ear about that one..)

See you in the Vein!
